Dear Fellow Cyclists
As cyclists, we thought you might be interested in the following
information. For those of you who don't know who Cooper
Jones was, he was a young Baddlands road cyclist who was hit by a
car and killed during a time trial event in Cheney. The Cooper
Jones Act was developed after his death to ensure the safety of
cyclists on the road and to assure us a place to race our bicycles
legally. What follows is information as to funding for
future educational awareness activities involving cycling and an
example of a letter sent to the senate by the family of Cooper Jones.
Thanks in advance for reading this and showing your support.
This is very important to me personally so please act on this with a
short e-mail message showing support.

NEW UPDATE AS OF 03/05/02
Thank you to everyone who contacted members of the
House Transportation
Committee and voiced their support for SSB 6248, which would provide
funding
for bicycle/pedestrian safety education by creating a Share the Road
license
plate.
The bill was amended and passed by the House Transportation
Committee. As
amended, SSB 6248 will create an emblem that can be affixed to a
license
plate. $20 from the sale of each emblem would be deposited into the
Cooper
Jones Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Education account established by the
Washington Traffic Safety Commission. The bill must now be approved
by the
full House then receive Senate concurrence.
Action needed: contact your House representative and ask them to
support
SSB 6248. If you do not know who your representative is, go to
http://dfind.leg.wa.gov/dfinder.cfm.
Thanks for taking action!
