USCF Sanctioned

2006 18TH Annual Cooper Jones Memorial Twilight Series

Volunteers are needed for the Twilight Series Races. We especially need volunteers for the road courses... look over the list of assignments and email or call to let us know where you can help! Thank you

Below is a brief description of the various assignments/jobs that need to be filled for the weekly races:

Official -
responsible for scoring the race, maintaining all the rules of the race, filling out paperwork if you are the chief official for the USCF, etc. Officials are licensed by the USCF and must take classes and pass exams. For closed courses at Spokane Raceway Park, we can get by with one official as a minimum. For the Time Trials and Road Races, we will need multiple officials. Officials also do registration for the races when needed, for example when we have a road race or Time Trial scheduled.

Registration - sign up racers, process registration fees, release forms, setup registration area, tables, supplies, etc. Need to be on site one hour before the race starts. Registration closes about 10 minutes before the race starts. After registration is closed you can assist in other areas if needed (driving/marshaling), or even race if all other areas are staffed!

Marshal - marshals are used at major intersections, mainly in our road courses. Depending on the course, we may need a single marshal at a corner or multiple marshals at a corner. Plan to show up at the race no later than 30 minutes before the event so you can get instructions from the race organizers. May also take out signs for the corner you will be working.

Course Setup - responsible for setting up signs (Department Of Transportation, Sandwich Boards, 1K, 200m) before each road race. Also reports back any road conditions that may impact the race. Plan to show up at the race at least one hour before the event. Sometimes signs may be sent out with corner marshals if needed. Responsible for collection of all signs used during the race. Note again that corner marshals may also bring their signs back to the start/finish area.

A/B/C Lead - lead car drivers with vehicles. Lead cars are used for our road courses and go in front of each of the packs to alert oncoming traffic that the race is approaching. Cars maintain a distance well in front of the racers. Need to arrive 45 minutes before the start of the race so signs can be placed on the vehicle. We use "safe" signs that will not scratch vehicles. Most road courses we will try to run three seperate packs, so we need three lead cars and drivers.

A/B/C Follow -
follow car drivers with vehicles. Follow cars are used for our road courses and follow each of the packs to alert traffic approaching from behind that a race is up the road. Need to arrive 45 minutes before the start of the race so signs can be placed on the the vehicle. We use "safe" signs that will not scratch vehicles. Most road courses we will try to run three seperate packs, so in most cases we need three follow cars and drivers. An exception to this, sometimes we can utilize an Official as a follow vehicle as well.

turnaround

Course Notes:

The course is aprx 12 miles long. Racers will start inside the gated area at the 7 mile bridge side of the trail. Racers will start at one minute intervals and will race three loops. Racers will race on the centennial trail toward town... the turn around will be at the base of the short/steep pitch leading up to the two gates/bowl and pitcher overlook area. Racers will keep track of their laps. You will need to keep alert while racing on the course... deer and or other animals have been known to cross the road... and although we will be alerting other cyclists and pedestrians... the course
should not be considered completely closed, meaning don't just put your head down and not pay attention to what is in front of you! Racers must stay as close to "your" side of the road as possible. There is no centerline painted
on the course, but don't go anywhere near the center of the road. Watch for signs for parking at the 7 mile side of the course... some may even be able to just ride to the course.

Directions To Cheney
Getting to Cheney is a piece of cake. From Spokane take I-90 west towards Seattle. After 15 miles from Spokane you will see the Cheney/Four Lakes/ EWU exit..take it. That puts you on the highway to Cheney (904) which is only 5 miles away. There are only 3 traffic lights in Cheney...after you pass the last one, go another mile or two and make a right turn onto Presley road. You will then see signs to the race .(it is only 1/2 block from where you turned) Registration is at Salnave Park.

Directions to Spokane Raceway Park
From I-90 take the Davenport/Grand Coulee Dam/Airport/Fairchild AFB exit (277) near the top of the hill. Continue on highway 2 until you come to the first stop light. That is Hayford Road. You will see the Spokane Raceway Park Sign on the corner . Make a right turn and go 1 mile. Make a left at the traffic light and take the SRP road into the complex. The road to the left will take you to the prison, so stay right. I will open the gates at 5 am.
